Pacho Flores travels to Sweden for the premiere of the trumpet concerto Caballos Mágicos, by Christian Lindberg, with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, as well as for the recording of an album with works by Lindberg for European Grammophon. Along with this new piece, the recording includes Un Sueño Morisco, double concerto for trumpet and trombone that was commissioned and premiered by the ORTVE with Pacho Flores, Ximo Vicedo on the trombone and Lindberg as conductor. Lindberg will on this occasion perform again not only as conductor but also as trombonist.
This concert, which got its premiere in Spain with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia, is part of the project of shared commissions for new trumpet concerts to prominent composers launched by Pacho Flores and managed by his international agency ACM Concerts. The composers who have taken part in the first two rounds of commissions are Arturo Márquez, Paquito D’Rivera, Roberto Sierra, Efraín Oscher, Daniel Freiberg and Lindberg himself, and there is a third round in preparation now. The orchestras that have been involved in the different joint commissions and premieres are the National Symphony of Mexico, Tucson Symphony, Hyogo PAC Orchestra of Japan, Oviedo Filarmonía, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Orquesta de Minería, Valencia Orchestra, San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Sinfónica de la Región de Murcia, Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine or the Arctic Philharmonic; and the conductors who have or are going to participate in these premieres are Carlos Miguel Prieto, José Luis Gómez, Michiyoshi Inoue, Lucas Macías, Domingo Hindoyan, Manuel Hernández-Silva, Rafael Payare, Paul Daniel and Christian Lindberg. Several of these concerts have already been recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon label.
The contribution of this project to the expansion of the trumpet repertoire has had no equal in the history of the instrument. This, together with the technological evolution of new four-piston prototypes in new keys that Pacho Flores is carrying out with the help of the Spanish manufacturer STOMVI, his intense educational activity, the recording legacy he is producing —in which he alternates the great classical works for the trumpet with this new exclusive repertoire— and, naturally, his unbeatable musical and technical conditions, makes Pacho Flores the most influential classical trumpeter in history. To these premieres must also be added the concerts that many other composers dedicate to Pacho on their own initiative, as well as those he has himself composed, such as Cantos y Revueltas, or what is possibly the first flugelhorn concerto ever written.
Pacho Flores premieres Caballos mágicos, the new concerto for trumpet and orchestra by Christian Lindberg, next Thursday, May 27 with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. The orchestra commissioned this piece together with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in Turkey, and another ensemble yet to be determined. This is the third absolute premiere by Pacho Flores with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia (RFG), and the second within the Project of Shared Commissions for New Trumpet Concertos. Pacho Flores and the RFG premiered in January 2018, under Manuel Hernández-Silva, Pacho’s composition Cantos y Revueltas, in a concert tour that included Santiago, Vigo and A Coruña. The concerts were recorded and gave rise to the eponymous double CD / DVD for Deutsche Grammophon. In November 2019 and with the same conductor, Pacho and the RFG premiered Danzas Latinas, by Efraín Oscher. On this occasion, Paul Daniel, Principal Conductor of the orchestra, will be in charge of the new premiere.
Lindberg is also the author of Akban Bunka, one of the concerts that are part of Pacho Flores’ usual repertoire and that he has played all over the world, as well as of Un Sueño Morisco, a double concerto for trumpet and trombone that was commissioned and premiered by the RTVE Orchestra in March 2019, with Ximo Vicedo on the trombone and Lindberg himself on the podium, and that Pacho and Ximo have played this past 1 May at the ADDA in Alicante. Caballos mágicos will be the fifth concert premiered by Pacho Flores within this project of shared commissions after those by Arturo Márquez, Paquito D’Rivera, Roberto Sierra and the aforementioned Efraín Oscher. These two first rounds of commissions will be closed with the premiere of a sixth concert by Daniel Freiberg, and the project will soon be completed with a third round by three new composers.
Orchestras from all over the world participate in this project of commissions, and despite all the delays and inconveniences caused by the pandemic, many of the premieres, since the first one in September 2018, have already been carried out. What’s more important, these concerts become then part of Pacho Flores’ usual repertoire. Christian Lindberg has also been the director of Fractales, Pacho Flores’ third album for Deutsche Grammophon, and they recently recorded duets by Mozart and Bach’s inventions in an arrangement for trumpet and trombone for the European Grammophon label.
Christian Lindberg and Pacho Flores have released a new recording for the label European Grammophon featuring arrangements of Bach’s Inventions for trumpet and trombone, which will be available on Spotify since October 21. This is not the first recording collaboration between Flores and Lindberg, who released the album FRACTALES for Deutsche Grammophon at the end of 2018 together with the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording included, among other concerts of the trumpet repertoire such as those by Haydn or Arutunian, the piece Akban Bunka, composed by Lindberg himself, which Pacho has performed all over the world. The album awarded Pacho the gold medal in the category of best instrumentalists at the Global Music Awards.
The Swedish composer, trombonist and conductor is writing a new concert for trumpet dedicated to Pacho Flores. The composition, which will soon be recorded, is a joint commission by various international orchestras such as the Real Filharmonía de Galicia in Spain, conducted by Paul Daniel, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in Turkey and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, both led by Lindberg himself. In March 2019, Pacho Flores and Christian Lindberg, accompanied on that occasion by trombonist Ximo Vicedo and the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, participated in the world premiere of Un Sueño Morisco, a double concert for trumpet and trombone.
Pacho Flores opens his 2020/21 symphonic season with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan, together with maestro Christian Lindberg —trombonist, conductor and composer as well as a friend and mentor to Pacho. The program includes Haydn’s Concerto for trumpet and Akban Bunka for trumpet and orchestra by Lindberg himself. Both works appear on the album FRACTALES (Deutsche Grammophon), which was recorded by both artists together with the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra.
Pacho Flores and Christian Lindberg have a long history of collaboration that will be continued with further concerts, commissions and recordings. Christian Lindberg takes part in Pacho’s project of shared commissions for new trumpet concerts, with premieres already scheduled in Turkey, Spain and Sweden which will later be recorded with other works by Lindberg such as Un Sueño Morisco. This double concert for trumpet, trombone and orchestra was commissioned and premiered by the Orquesta Sinfónica Radio Televisión Española together with Pacho, trombonist Ximo Vicedo and Lindberg himself as a conductor.
Pacho’s agenda will continue, if the COVID-19 allows it, with his usual concert and educational activities in Spain and Europe, Asia and North and South America. Among the upcoming premieres are the world premiere of his Ma-Jokaraisa (My Other Heart), a concert for flugelhorn, together with the National Orchestra of Chile and Rodolfo Saglimbeni, which will then have its European premiere with the Orquesta de Extremadura and Manuel Hernández-Silva; the premieres in Asia, Spain and Sweden of Christian Lindberg’s new trumpet concerto; the Spanish premieres of Salseando by Roberto Sierra with the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Región de Murcia and Hernández-Silva, and of the Concerto Venezolano by Paquito D’Rivera with the Valencia Orchestra and Vicente Alberola, etc.
Meanwhile, Pacho Flores continues with the project of shared commissions for new trumpet concerts with a new commission by Daniel Freiberg. A new phase of this project is now about to begin, with new composers to be incorporated, which will be announced in due time.
On November 20 at the Auditorio de Galicia, Pacho Flores and Manuel Hernández-Silva will present, together with the Royal Galician Philharmonia, Cantos y Revueltas, Pacho Flores’ new album for Deutsche Grammophon with the Galician orchestra conducted by Hernández-Silva that includes, among other works and as a centerpiece, the homonymous concert for trumpet and Venezuelan cuatro by Pacho Flores himself.
Cantos y Revueltas
Cantos y Revueltas is a fantasia concertante for trumpet, Venezuelan cuatro and strings, premiered last January 2018 in Santiago, Vigo and A Coruña by the Royal Galician Philharmonia under Hernández-Silva, together with cuatro player Leo Rondón and, of course, Pacho Flores’ trumpets. It is a work rooted in old work songs and popular Venezuelan tunes, but also in modern Caribbean-like rhythms. The album begins with the Concerto para corno da caccia by Johann Baptist Georg Neruda, continues with the Aria from Bachiana Brasileira No. 5 by Villa-Lobos, Cantos y Revueltas, El Diablo suelto by Heraclio Fernández and Piazolla’s Winter in Buenos Aires, and was recorded live at the Palacio de la Ópera in A Coruña on January 13, 2018.
This is a double CD-DVD that includes a video recording of the concert and various extras, including interviews revealing the origin of Pacho’s work as well as curiosities about the process that led to its premiere in Santiago and its recording. Cantos y Revueltas is the fourth recording for Pacho Flores with Deutsche Grammophon after Cantar, with the Konzerthausorchester in Berlin conducted Christian Vásquez, Entropía, with guitar player Jesús ‘Pingüino’ González, and Fractales, with the Arctic Philharmonic conducted by Christian Lindberg. These concerts also counted on Pablo Barreiro for the audio recording and Antonio Cid and Joaquín Calderón for the video recording and production, which allowed to obtain a result that met Deutsche Grammophon’s highest artistic and technical standards.
Pacho Flores
Every so often, sometimes after several generations, some artists appear who are a milestone in their respective disciplines. This is the case with Pacho Flores, the great trumpet player of the 21st century so far, who is improving the performance technique and the expressive possibilities of the instrument to unknown levels. In collaboration with his brand, his STOMVI team, he is carrying out a formidable development and technical improvement of the trumpet, with new instruments in different keys and with four pistons that expand its register and palette. Many of these instruments are prototypes only available to Pacho, and only some, once tested, get produced for the market sale.
Pacho is also actively promoting an unprecedented expansion of the repertoire for solo trumpet and orchestra. After releasing some works dedicated to him by composers such as Efraín Oscher (Concierto Mestizo, 2010; Soledad, 2013, included in the album CANTAR; Barroqueana Venezolana nº 2, 2017; and Apex, double concert for trumpet and clarinet, 2018), Giancarlo Castro (Stunning trumpet, 2017), Alain Trudel (Preach pour trumpet et orchestre), etc., Pacho decided to take over and launch a project of shared commissions to some of the most relevant composers nowadays such as Arturo Márquez, Roberto Sierra, Paquito D’Rivera, Efraín Oscher, Christian Lindberg or Daniel Freiberg, which allows a systematic and scheduled update of new works with technical and musical requirements according to the possibilities offered by the new instruments. This program has already begun to bear fruit: Arturo Márquez and Paquito D’Rivera’s works have already been premiered, and the concerts by Roberto Sierra and Efraín Oscher’s will be presented this season. In addition, and in collaboration with his label, Deutsche Grammophon, Pacho is producing the most complete discography on the trumpet performed by the same artist, recording reference versions of the repertoire classics, as well as the new works that, by his own efforts, are joining the literature for this instrument.
