*Libretto by Wilhelm August Wohlbrück, based on the play *Der Vampir oder die Totenbraut* (1821) by Heinrich Ludwig Ritter, itself was based on the short story *The Vampyre* by John Polidori. First performed on 29 March 1828 in Leipzig.*

Bizarre creatures emerging from the imagination of Dr John W Polidori and Mary Shelley create a gothic world intensified by Marschner’s sensitive music. Inspired by the Italian style and the German Singspiel, the work introduces modern aspects that strengthen the psychological dimension of the action and characters. The vampire, a creature locked outside the world of the living and the dead, seeks a home, and principally an identity, in a unique ambiance imbued with wild romanticism. The sacrificer becomes the sacrificed unless he can find the balance between Eros and Thanatos. Three virgins to be immolated in twenty-four hours…*

Ira Levin fue asistente de Michael Gielen en la Frankfurt Opera, Director Principal de la Bremen Opera, Director Principal en la Deutsche Oper am Rhein y Principal Director Invitado en la Kassel Opera. En 2002 debutó en la Semper Oper durante el Dresden Opera Festival con *Tristán e Isolda* en una sustitución de última hora y sin ensayos, lo que le valió ser invitado inmediatamente de nuevo para dirigir *Die Frau ohne Schatten.*

En América del Sur fue Director Musical y Artístico del Teatro y la Orquesta de Sao Paulo, Director Musical y Artístico del Teatro Nacional de Brasil y Principal Director Invitado del Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires donde hizo su debut con Lohengrin en 2011, fue reinvitado en 2012 para dirigir la primera representación americana del Oedipe de Enescu y donde desde entonces dirige varios títulos de ópera y conciertos sinfónicos cada año.
